Art, at its best, is nothing less than the defense of humanity against those forces that would dehumanize, and threaten us with erasure. Whether that be through stereotypes and narrative-setting of American racism, sexism, and classism, or the creeping destruction of families and communities by dependence, violence and disease, or as Gary is referencing, tyranny, eradication, and genocide. Art is many things, but among them is a vital tool of survival.
