Languages die if the communities which use them stop doing so. This can happen to a community for a number of reasons: it is assimilated into another community, it is broken up, or it is extinguished. New York may be the home of more speakers of endangered languages than anywhere else in the world. The New York Times has a story about this as well as an online "City Room" entry, "Land of Lonely Tongues".
