News From My Son - Getting To Work On The Near West Side Of Cleveland

10 October 2010 - 11:45am - 4:00pm

The Urban Defense Project (UDP) will be coordinating volunteers to knock doors and distribute CFL bulbs and Home Weatherization Assistance Program (HWAP) information in the Detroit Shoreway Ecovillage. The Detroit Shoreway neighborhood is the perfect location for this type of globally-minded, locally-enacted action, containing within it numerous nationalities and languages, tremendous diversity of background in race, ethnicity, religion, and class, and an orientation toward sustainability as exemplified in the nation's first urban Ecovillage.

After a brief training on CFL installation and education, and an overview of some of the exciting ways in which Cleveland is already getting to work, we'll go out at about 12:45 and hit the streets with our bulbs and materials. We'll finish all work at 4:00, and gather back at the house for some light refreshment (donations of food heartily and gratefully accepted!) and celebration.

While the main focus will be on energy efficiency, which has benefits both environmental and economic, we also welcome other organizations and groups that are interested in participating by providing volunteer opportunities, whether in the form of neighborhood clean-ups, working at a local community garden, or another idea.

If you want to get to know your neighbors and fellow Clevelanders, show the world what determination and sustainability can look like, and hear more about the exciting work that's already going on in Cleveland (with some recaps from our participation in the Sustainable Cleveland 2019 summit), we hope you'll join us on Sunday the 10th.

Please contact Joel Solow (joel@urbandefenseproject.org) if interested in providing further volunteer opportunities or participating in any way. For more information on the Urban Defense Project, check us out online at www.urbandefenseproject.org.
